Biomass Sustainability
Sustainability & Responsible Sourcing
Sustainably Sourced. Made in Scotland. Independently Certified.
At Puffin Wood Fuels, sustainability starts with where our wood comes from, how it is used and how our products are made.
We are a family-run Scottish business manufacturing wood fuel products in Aberdeenshire. The timber and wood materials used in our products are sourced from Scottish woodlands and sawmills, helping us maintain a close connection with our supply chain and the materials that go into the products we sell.
For us, responsible wood fuel isn't simply about calling something "renewable". It means looking at the source of the timber, responsible forest management, traceability, fuel quality and the wider supply chain.
Making Good Use of Scotland's Timber Resources
Not every part of a tree harvested for the timber industry becomes construction timber or another high-value wood product.
Our raw materials can include:
- Sawdust and wood chip produced as co-products by Scottish sawmills
- Roundwood
- Timber which is unsuitable for normal sawmill processing because of its size, shape or specification
Using these materials for wood fuel allows useful energy to be produced from timber and co-products that form part of Scotland's forestry and wood-processing industry.
The material is processed into consistent, high-quality fuel products, including our Puffin wood pellets, here in Scotland.
What Makes Wood Fuel Sustainable?
Wood is a renewable resource when forests are responsibly managed and replenished, but responsible biomass involves more than simply replacing the trees that are harvested.
The sustainability of wood fuel also considers:
Responsible forest management
Where the timber originates and how the woodland is managed.
Legal sourcing
Ensuring timber has been harvested and supplied legally.
Traceability
Being able to follow certified wood materials through the supply chain.
Lifecycle emissions
Considering emissions associated with harvesting, processing, manufacturing and transporting the fuel.
Fuel quality
Producing a consistent fuel that burns efficiently and performs as expected in the appliance for which it is intended.
That is why independent certification and recognised industry standards are such an important part of what we do.
Scottish Wood. Scottish Production.
Puffin has been manufacturing wood pellets in Scotland for more than ten years.
Our pellet production facility is based in Aberdeenshire, with raw materials sourced from Scottish woodlands and sawmills.
Keeping the production process here in Scotland allows us to maintain control over the quality of our pellets from raw material through production, storage and despatch.
We supply customers throughout Scotland using our specialist blown pellet delivery fleet, as well as offering bagged and palletised products for delivery throughout the UK.
Sustainability Without the Greenwash
We think it is important to be clear about what sustainability means.
Wood fuel still requires energy to harvest, process, manufacture and deliver, which is why we don't believe sustainability should be reduced to a single environmental claim.
Instead, we focus on the things we can demonstrate:
✓ Scottish-sourced wood materials
✓ Use of sawmill co-products
✓ FSC® Chain of Custody certification
✓ Biomass Suppliers List registration
✓ ENplus® A1 certified pellet production
✓ Independent auditing and testing
✓ In-house pellet production in Aberdeenshire
✓ Used pellet bag recycling scheme
Our aim is simple: to produce high-quality wood fuels from responsibly sourced materials, maintain recognised standards and give our customers clear information about the fuel they are buying.
